Fresh Studio speaks at international aquaculture workshop

PENANG – Fresh Studio have spent the last few years building an innovative seafood sourcing system mostly from small scale farmers in Vietnam to supply one of the largest wholesalers in the world.

Therefore, Nicolas Privet, Aquaculture and Fisheries Manager of Fresh Studio, was invited by The World Fish Center to join a workshop in Penang, (Malaysia) to share his experiences and knowledge in connecting small-scale farmers to markets.

This Workshop, part of a GIZ project ‘Pro Poor Business Models for Small Scale Aquaculture’ was intended to further help identify business models and finance options which could deliver positive development outcomes in the growing aquaculture sector. The workshop focused on:

  • Building understanding of the economic, social and environmental case for investments into small and medium-scale aquaculture enterprises;
  • Sharing knowledge of business examples and models for aquaculture investment, particularly among practitioners working with small and medium scale aquaculture and agriculture businesses;
  • Conducting a mapping of the financial and technical assistance landscape for small and medium scale aquaculture enterprises in Asia, identifying gaps and ways of filling those gaps;
  • Developing a shared vision among participants on follow-up action.

Fresh Studio co-founder of the Food Agri & Aqua Business Sector Committee (FAASC)

The agriculture sector plays a crucial role for the Vietnamese economy. To improve this sector, four leading agriculture companies took the initiative to form the Food, Agri and Aquaculture Business Sector committee (FAASC). The founding companies include de Heus, FrieslandCampina, Control Union and Fresh Studio.

The FAASC is formed under the direction of the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (Eurocham). Since its start, the FAASC has grown to twelve members, among which Metro Cash & Carry Vietnam, Bureau Veritas, Bayer, Nestlé, Invivo labs, La Vie, Virbac and Yara. FAASC believes that the Food, Agri and Aqua Business sector can become stronger, more competitive and more high-tech without detrimental effects for the population, country and the environment. Contrary, in the long-term the sector could become more sustainable without necessarily increasing the costs.


The objective of FAASC is to improve the competitiveness of the Food, Agri and Aqua Business sector, by sharing knowledge and experience with the public sector and by sharing of best practices among the FAASC members in Vietnam. In order to reach this objective, FAASC:

  • Focuses on improvement of food safety for human-beings and animals trough a value chain approach;
  • Creates a level playing field for small, large, local and international companies regardless of legal entity, size and nationality, based on a common interest,
  • Creates a sustainable Food, Agri and Aqua Business sector in Vietnam for the long term and improves the sustainability of the sector.

Fresh studio assists in sourcing of Pangasius for international airlines

CAN THO – Pangasius fish is sustainably farmed in the Mekong delta of Vietnam, and a large part of the production sites are now certified for International farming standard such as GlobalGAP, B.A.P, and lately the ASC standard (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) has been introduced.

Pangasius is sold in more than 130 countries, mostly processed into white, skinless, boneless fillets with a neutral taste. It is a nutritious product with a low to moderate fat content and high levels of protein. Pangasius has all the characteristics to be an excellent substitute to the over-fished marine species.

In accordance with its sustainability policy, a leader of the airline catering industry, supplying over 25 million meals to over thirty scheduled carriers has selected Fresh Studio to assist them in the sourcing of their pangasius fillets from Vietnam.

After having advised this catering company during the supplier selection process, Fresh Studio carries out processing supervision, consignment inspection, and product sampling for laboratory analysis, to ensure that the final product matches the required high-end specifications in terms of food safety and quality.

Expansion of the Fresh Studio quality assurance team

HCMC – The team of quality assurance specialists in Fresh Studio is growing to meet demand from its clients to develop quality assurance systems, and prepare companies for certification in standards such as GlobalGAP for fruit and vegetables, GLOBALGAP for pangasius and shrimp, BRC, HACCP and IFS.

Recently the leader of the Quality Assurance team, Irmen Mantingh, was trained in the latest GLOBALGAP standard for pangasius and shrimp during a GLOBALGAP organized workshop in Kuala Lumpur. At the end of the training course, Irmen passed the exam with distinction. The QA team was also expanded recently with the addition of Ms Pham Thi Thanh Phuong, who is specialized in GLOBAL for fruit and vegetables. Phuong is one of the few specialists who has successfully prepared companies in the fruit sector in Vietnam for GLOBALGAP certification.Also interesting to read:

Fresh Studio opens a new office: HCMC

HCMC – Because of the growing portfolio of assignments for clients in HCMC and the Mekong Delta, Fresh Studio decided to open its third Vietnamese office in HCMC.

Currently the HCMC team consists of marketing consultants and quality assurance specialists. The marketing team in this office will focus on assignments in HCMC, allowing Fresh Studio to offer market and consumer research in one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas of Southeast Asia. The HCMC marketing team includes a strong team of interviewers and staff who can implement marketing campaigns. The quality assurance team assists our clients in Southern Vietnam in setting up QA systems to prepare them for certification of standards such as GLOBALGAP for fruit and vegetables, GLOBALGAP for pangasius and shrimp, BRC, HACCP, and IFC.

Soon the HCMC team will expand to include a web designer, IT specialist and a team of aquaculture production and processing specialists. Fresh Studio contracted by Italian Trade Commission

HANOI – The Fresh Studio Vietnam team has won a tender by the Italian Trade Commission to undertake a market survey on food processing machinery in Vietnam.

The focus of the market survey concerns processing equipment for beverages, vegetables and bakery production.

The research includes extensive desk research, a quantitative survey of 100 leading companies in the Vietnamese food processing industry and in-depth interviews with end-users, traders and key experts in the industry. The multi-disciplinary Fresh Studio team will provide a report to the Italian Trade Commission which will reveal a thorough understanding of the market for food processing machinery, the potential for Italian companies to increase their market share, as well as the business environment and legal system in Vietnam. In addition, a market assessment, including a SWOT analysis, will be presented and potential business partners for Italian companies will be identified.

LAO CAI – Sigrid Wertheim, Ho Thu Thuy and Nguyen Trung Anh successfully finalized market research for the Vietnamese cardamom sector.
