After six years of dedicated investment and collaboration, the Powering Aquaculture Progress (PAP) project in Myanmar is coming to a close. This milestone will be marked by a vibrant closing event held at Novotel Yangon, bringing together stakeholders from across the aquaculture sector to reflect, celebrate, and look forward.

The PAP project, a partnership between Fresh Studio, De Heus Myanmar, and other key players, has been instrumental in advancing sustainable aquaculture practices, empowering farmers, and strengthening market linkages throughout Myanmar including the first exports of Rohu from farmers within the project.

During the project period, PAP achieved the following objectives:

  • Creating access to modern input and technologies, therefore improving quality and access to inputs for farmers, mainly seed and feed;
  • Improvements on technical knowledge and know-how of farmers, academic institutions, and technical support staff from private and public organisations;
  • Improvement in efficiency of farming systems through transition towards more productive, shorter cycle and more diverse species, and increased transfer of adapted technologies;
  • Support value chain coordination between independent actors and promotion of products toward consumers.

Highlights of the Closing Event

  • Welcome Remarks by Cees Bansema (Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) and Ko Leo Zaw (Managing Director of De Heus Myanmar)
  • Project Achievements Presentation by Ko Thein Win (Fresh Studio)
  • Marketplace & Photo Gallery showcasing PAP’s activities and community engagement
  • Networking Lunch & Premiere of the PAP Cooking Show
  • Roundtable Discussion: ‘Why Should an Aquaculture Standard Be Followed?’ including BAP and PAP standards, panel discussion and Q&A
  • Celebration & Recognition: Certification of producer groups, honouring extension staff, and farmer speeches
  • Closing Remarks by the Master of Ceremony

A Legacy of Progress

Despite the project coming to a close, PAP leaves behind a strong legacy in the Myanmar aquaculture sector. The producer group, a group of dedicated fish farmers who are audited according to the PAP Production guidelines continue to produce fish in an efficient and sustainable manner for both domestic and export consumption.

The PAP project has not only improved aquaculture practices but also fostered a community of innovation, resilience, and sustainability. As the project concludes, its legacy will continue to influence Myanmar’s aquaculture landscape for years to come.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all partners, farmers, and stakeholders who made this journey possible.
